Sudden Unfamiliar Pavement Independencies

Examination of asphalt deformations. Are we still able to distinguish between what is human made and what originates solely from nature? The question was put forth during the past year, when the commute to my studio across the Zoobrücke in Cologne had me stop and gaze upon a flesh-like structure within its asphalt pavement, seemingly flowing downstream. Similar patterns may be recognized not while wandering parks, not grass beds, but streets and roads covered in asphalt and reminiscent more of ephemeral sand structures. I would like to call these urban phenomena Asphalt Beaches. Opposing sand beaches, asphalt beaches are not located on a coastline but surrounded by human constructed territories, eternalized throughout a basalt and crude oil mixture. Alongside light, temperature and obstacles such as light poles, street signs, car lanes, or drains the barrier between soil and our own body is moving. Together the factors reform as sudden unfamiliar pavement independencies, the title of the project.
